The IEA marked its 25th anniversary with a day of encounters and celebration in Jerusalem, bringing together members, coordinators, alumni, and supporters from across its community. The day included a walking tour and workshops led by members of the IEA community, followed by a community gathering and anniversary gala at the Jerusalem YMCA.
The celebration featured a greeting from the President of Israel, a presentation by IEA founder and director Dr. Yehuda Stolov on the organization’s 25-year history, personal stories from IEA coordinators and conversation circles in which participants shared memories and meaningful experiences from their encounters.
The evening concluded with a “I am peace“, a Hebrew-Arabic performance by Shira Golan. Together, the different elements of the day highlighted both the grassroots nature of IEA’s work and the wider community and connections created through 25 years of interfaith encounters.

South Jerusalem Interfaith Encounter Group (English report)
The group met for a session dedicated to discussing birth, the new-born baby, and the associated rituals and ceremonies. This encounter was part of a series exploring the stages of the lifecycle from the perspectives of the participants and their diverse religious and cultural backgrounds.
The session was divided into three parts. First, participants introduced themselves and shared information about where they lived, especially since most were new to the group.

The discussion then shifted to choosing names for newborns, with a focus on firstborns. Some participants spoke about selecting modern, international names with beautiful meanings, and one mentioned keeping a list of names he liked before his children were born. Others stated that choosing a name for the firstborn is sometimes linked to figures in the Torah or to religious and family traditions. Some participants also explained that naming a child after an ancestor is a way to preserve their memory and honour them. One of the Arab participants spoke about the customs followed in some Arab families, where it is socially preferable to give the eldest grandchild the grandfather’s name, despite there being no religious obligation to do so. The participants also emphasised that the choice of name is usually made through agreement and consultation between the spouses, not by one of them alone.
In the next part of the encounter, the discussion turned to the rituals and customs associated with birth. Among the practices mentioned was the custom of reciting the Adhan (call to prayer) in the newborn’s ear. The father, grandfather, or another senior male in the family recites the Adhan in a soft, quiet voice into the child’s ear immediately after birth, a custom followed by many Muslims.
The participants also discussed the gifts that a newborn receives from family and friends, and they spoke about the Aqiqah (sacrifice) in Islam, where a large portion of the meat is distributed to the needy and poor, in addition to being shared with relatives and neighbours, as an expression of gratitude and joy for the new baby.
