Following the UK government’s recent ban on trade goods from settlements, debate continues over whether diplomatic shifts can deliver lasting peace. But while world leaders focus on high-level politics, grassroots communities remain at the heart of building the trust that politics can only ever promise

In times of on-going trauma and conflict, fear and suspicion make it tempting to retreat into our own corners. TalkMatters’s initiatives – spanning music, ecology, tech, sports, and religion – are feeling this chill as bringing new people together gets tougher. But these inspirational initiatives are not backing down.

In this newsletter, we demonstrate their persistence with lively reports from the Arava Institute, the Interfaith Encounter Association and Roots – an initiative at the very coalface of the troubles in the West Bank. All three are doing their bit to build trust between Jews and Arabs on the ground.

Together with Oasis of Peace UK, we are taking a group of UK Muslims, Jews and Christians to Israel 8-15 November.

This interfaith visit is designed to offer far more than a traditional tour. Participants will have the opportunity to spend meaningful time within the unique community of Wahat al-Salam ~ Neve Shalom, engaging directly with Jewish, Muslim, Christian, and secular residents, educators, activists, and peacebuilders living the reality of shared society every day.

Throughout the week, participants can expect a thoughtful and immersive programme including:

• Interfaith dialogue between participants and local communities
• Meetings with Jewish and Palestinian residents of the village
• Visits to educational, cultural, and religious sites of significance
• Encounters with speakers offering diverse personal, spiritual, and political perspectives
• Shared meals and informal discussions within the community
• Opportunities for questions, respectful open dialogue and reflection
• Time to experience daily life within the village itself

Our purpose remains clear

Communities here in the UK – especially young people – need to understand the reality of Jewish and Arab citizens living side by side. They need to hear about the challenges, but also about the extraordinary opportunities that exist when we invest in relationships instead of division.

When we look beyond labels, we can recognise that we are all human beings who want the exact same things. We all want a roof over our heads, food on the table, somewhere to charge our mobile phone, and a good education for our children. Understanding this, we can unravel the ignorance that fuels anti-Zionism, Islamophobia and the racism shown towards Jewish and Muslim people.

Updates on the Initiatives

Interfaith Encounter Association (IEA)

The IEA  work to build bridges between Jews, Muslims, Christians and others. They have 63 groups all over Israel and the West Bank and this newsletter reports on their 25th celebration of operation and on one of their groups in South Jerusalem.

The IEA marked its 25th anniversary with a day of encounters and celebration in Jerusalem, bringing together members, coordinators, alumni, and supporters from across its community.

The day included a walking tour and workshops led by members of the IEA community, followed by a community gathering and anniversary gala at the Jerusalem YMCA. South Jerusalem Interfaith Encounter Group

The group met for a session dedicated to discussing birth, the newborn, and the associated rituals and ceremonies. This encounter was part of a series exploring the stages of the life cycle from the perspectives of the participants and their diverse religious and cultural backgrounds. The Arava Institute for Environmental Studies

 Arava is a leading environmental studies and research institute in the Middle East located at Kibbutz Ketura in southern Israel.  With an intake from Jordan, Palestine, Israel and around the world, Arava offers students the opportunity to learn from experts how to tackle climate change, water scarcity, sustainable agriculture and renewable energy.
