Arava is a leading environmental studies and research institute in the Middle East located at Kibbutz Ketura in southern Israel.
With an intake from Jordan, Palestine, Israel and around the world, Arava offers students the opportunity to learn from experts and to develop the skills that enable them to lead the region and the world in solving today’s most pressing environmental challenges.
At the same time, students have the chance to hear each others’ stories and to rally against racism and prejudice.
Board members, alumni, supporters, and friends gathered at the Israel Congregation in Vermont, to celebrate 30 years of the Arava Institute. The afternoon featured remarks from Dr. Tareq Abu Hamed and Rachel Kalikow, reflections from alumni Anne Jacobs and Josh Halman, and a wonderful programme of music led by Maxine Linehan, Joana Genova, and Ariel Rudiakov.
It was a meaningful opportunity to celebrate three decades of bringing people together to solve shared environmental problems, build trust across borders, and train the next generation of environmental leaders. Thank you to the musicians, speakers, sponsors, volunteers, and everyone who joined in for this special afternoon.
A new podcast from the Arava Institute
We’re excited to share Ecology & Community, a new podcast series created by Arava Institute intern Ahmad Asaly that explores the people, ideas, and experiences that make the Institute community unique. With two episodes now available, the podcast features conversations with students and interns about their environmental research, life on campus, and the personal and professional growth that comes from living and learning in the Arava desert.

In a recent blog post for the Times of Israel, Alon Tal, environmentalist, author, and former Knesset Member explores the environmental priorities he believes should be at the forefront of Israel’s next government. A co-founder of the Arava Institute and a longtime leader in Israel’s environmental movement, Alon currently serves on the faculty of Tel Aviv University, where he continues to advocate for sustainability, environmental policy, and climate action.
