Based in the city of Haifa, MHC is one of Israel’s largest multi-sports clubs, with nineteen disciplines and approximately 3.500 registered athletes – from grassroots to Olympic level. The association is part of the Maccabi Israel movement.
Alongside competitive success, they bring thousands of Arab and Jewish children together to play rugby and practise judo and athletics. Chairman Amit Gonen says “it is not just about sport – it’s about community and doing the right thing”.
The Maccabi Haifa Association was founded in December 1912 as “Maccabi Bat Galim.” The first activists of the association were Dr. Eliyahu Auerbach and teacher Neumann from the Ezra Association school. The founders believed in the ideological ideas of the Maccabi movement and wanted to establish a branch in Haifa. The leading sports of the club in its beginnings were swimming and water polo. Among the additional sports activities were soccer and basketball.
Maccabi Haifa athletes recorded impressive achievements in many sports, including: soccer, basketball, volleyball, handball, ice hockey, swimming, water polo, track and field, gymnastics, weightlifting, fencing, tennis, table tennis, boxing, chess, judo and more.
