Join TalkMatters on Sunday 14th March at Muswell Hill United Synagogue to meet Rabbi Hanan Schlesinger and Noor Awad from Roots. Roots is a particularly interesting initiative because it demonstrates co-operation between Israeli settlers and Palestinians.  Based in the Gush Etzion-Bethlehem-Hebron area, Roots works to advance the two peoples towards a new social and political reality founded upon dignity, trust, and mutual recognition and respect for both peoples’ particular historic belonging to the entire land.

Rabbi Hanan Schlesinger

Hanan Schlesinger is an Orthodox rabbi and teacher, and a Zionist settler who has been profoundly transformed by his encounters with Palestinians and the Palestinian People beginning in late 2013. In early 2014, Rabbi Hanan and other Israelis and Palestinians founded Roots. Rabbi Hanan is currently the Director of International Relations.

Noor Awad

Noor Awad’s family moved from Amman, Jordan to Beit Sahour following the signing of the Oslo Accords in 1993. There, he began thinking about his identity as a Palestinian refugee. In 2014, Noor was licensed by the Palestinian Ministry of Tourism. A meeting with Rabbi Hanan in 2016 led to Noor joining Roots where he currently organises joint Israeli-Palestinian activities and speaks to visiting groups about his personal experience living though the conflict as a Palestinian who has seen much tragedy but who is motivated to work towards a political solution
